Library Media Center

Vientiane International School believes that access to information is fundamental to learners taking successful responsible action in the 21st century. Our school fosters information literacy by offering its learners a Library Media Center, which serves as a central hub of learning for student-teacher collaboration. The Library Media Center is key in providing resources and services to support staff in the delivery of our international curriculum, and is valuable in supporting and fostering reading among learners. Destiny, the library catalogue is accessible from home and from school via the internet allowing learning to take place outside the classroom.

Purposes of the Library Media Center include helping learners to develop the skills for finding, assessing and using all types of information. The Center hosts events to educate and inform library users and to promote knowledge acquisition of the world around us. Reading is encouraged through activities and a collection of resources are made available to promote student leisure reading. Through its World Languages resources section, students are given opportunities to read in more than one language, a VIS and IB objective. The Center also supports the reading needs of the school community by providing access to library resources that may otherwise be unavailable.

BORROWING LIBRARY MATERIALS

The library believes it is important to encourage the use of the library materials.  Students are encouraged to be responsible users and only take the number of books they know they can look after and return. Students and parents are able to borrow fiction, non-fiction and picture books, parenting books and magazines.  Parents new to living in Laos are encouraged to take advantage of our extensive collection of books on the history and culture of Laos. Videos/DVDs can be borrowed by parents. Students can borrow a video/DVD if they show the library staff signed parental permission.

The VIS Library aims to create an innovative and responsive library service that challenges learners toward independent inquiry, inspires an appreciation of many forms of expression and creativity, and prepares learners for positive participation and contribution in the global community.
