At the beginning of each year all teachers who give assignments requiring research and writing should take time to explain what plagiarism is and why it is not acceptable. It is also important to let students know that besides copying written work from texts or the internet that plagiarism also includes taking someone’s idea and calling it your own. The following policy should be used in handling cases of plagiarism:
Plagiarism in Middle School – Grades 6-8 The first instance of plagiarism should be dealt with by a clear explanation. This is informally recorded in the student’s file by the class teacher. The student should be given the opportunity to rewrite the piece of work and it should be marked without penalty. The second instance should be followed by a letter to the parents from the teacher, and a copy of this letter put in the student’s file as a formal record. The student will receive a zero for the assignment. The third instance should be dealt with by suspension by administration to emphasize the gravity of the situation.
Plagiarism in High School – Grades 9-12 The first instance of plagiarism should be dealt with by a clear explanation and a warning, which is recorded in the student’s file by the teacher. That piece of work or section of the work plagiarized should be given a zero mark. The second instance should be followed by a letter to the parents and a copy of the letter put in the student’s file as a formal record. The third instance should be dealt with by suspension by administration to emphasize the gravity of the situation.
