Admission of students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) The SEN Coordinator, as part of the Student Services team and in collaboration with class teachers, provides school-wide support to students with individual learning needs. Given the inclusive nature of VIS and the resources available, it is difficult to accommodate the full range of students with disabilities. Early intervention is preferred as academic expectations increase at Secondary levels. The school does not have the facilities to cater for non-ambulatory students. Generally, admission of students with mild learning disabilities is available at all levels within the school. Each student’s educational needs will be evaluated in the following areas: • past school functioning and academic records • basic skill achievement levels • oral and written communication skills • current social and emotional functioning Further psychometric assessment may be necessary to determine the student’s specific learning difficulties and intellectual levels. An external educational psychologist report would then be required. The school may also require a statement of medical history including any significant health needs and information on additional services currently (or previously) provided. The final decision on admission for students with individual learning needs rests with the Director.
