The Iowa Basic Skills test for Language and Math is offered to students in Grades 3-8 late in the final semester of each year. This standardized test measures Language and Math skills and compares them to results achieved by mostly North American children in a similar age group who take the test during the same month as VIS students. This test is optional. It should be clearly understood that there is no reliable and valid standardized test that can be given to students in an international school such as ours. There will be biases in a standardized test. Students who are English as a Second Language (ESL) Learners will generally have a more difficult time. Secondary students generally take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) beginning Grade 11. The SAT is widely used as part of the admissions process by universities and colleges in North America. English language assessment for standardized tests such as the TOEFL, can also be arranged with our College Counselor. The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) is offered to students in Grades 10 and 11.
