Students may be experiencing difficulties in one or more of the following areas: reading skills, written expression, listening comprehension, oral expression, mathematics calculation, reasoning, social relationships or behavior. Many students at VIS have had their learning interrupted, the majority have English as an additional language, and some students have specific learning difficulties. A differentiated curriculum is designed to enable all students achieve improved success in school.
The Student Support Team will work with teachers to assess, plan and program for identified students. Certain outcomes and/or teaching methods and materials may be adapted for one or more students. Some may require an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and additional specialist support either within the classroom or by being withdrawn.
Procedure:
• Teachers will complete a student referral form and submit it to the Student Support Team • The student and his/her parents will be consulted and asked to sign a letter of agreement and return it to the school • The Special Education Needs (SEN) and/or the English as a Second Language (ESL) Coordinator will conduct assessments and observations and consult with teachers and parents. Together they will devise strategies to support the student(s) • All reports and academic records will note where a student received a modified program or assessment task • Placement in a program will be evaluated each semester by the Student Support Team in consultation with teachers, parents and the student
