The Purposes of Vientiane International School, based on the School's Articles of Association, are:
§ Educational Quality: To provide the best possible international education for its students.
§ Internationalism: To promote its students' international understanding and knowledge and appreciation of the many cultures of the world.
§ Social, Emotional, and Physical Development: To promote its students' social, emotional, and physical development.
§ Appreciation of Laos: To provide its students with an appreciation of the people, history, and culture of Lao PDR.
To clarify the meaning of the School Purposes and help the School create and implement programs to achieve these purposes, Vientiane International School has adopted the following goals:
1. To achieve educational quality appropriate to student level of development, VIS will:
§ emphasize basic academic skills, including literacy and numeracy, and the ability to study, apply and adapt technology, think critically and creatively, and to solve problems;
§ provide a sound, high-quality basic educational program in English, including an emphasis on writing, so that students will be prepared to continue their education in other English-medium schools;
§ establish achievement standards that are similar to those in other international schools; and
§ nurture students' love of learning to support their success in both future schooling and adult life.
2. To promote internationalism VIS will:
§ emphasize knowledge and appreciation of the many cultures of the world and include an understanding of international issues within the curriculum; and
§ foster respect for all cultures within the informal life of the school.
3. To promote social, emotional, and physical development, VIS will:
§ provide a healthy and safe school environment; and
§ nurture the values of honesty, mutual trust and respect, appreciation of individual differences and rights, and a sense of responsibility.
4. To foster appreciation of Laos, VIS will:
§ provide students with an understanding of the people, history, and culture of Lao PDR through its curriculum and through the use of Lao resources to support the curriculum; and
§ encourage interaction with the Lao community through school activities and service learning opportunities.
