Please read this newsletter thoroughly and share it with your parents. It contains a lot of information that you will need to know in order for your school year to run smoothly.
We will discuss any questions you may have regarding its contents.
Your teachers this year for the main core subjects are as follows:
Grade 6L Advisor: Ms. Leeanne
Grade 6S Advisor: Mr. Steve
Grade 6 English: Ms. Leeanne, Ms. Whetu
Grade 6 Science: Ms Dobi and Mr. Steve
Grade 6 Social Studies: Ms. Leeanne
Grade 6 Math’s: Mr. Steve
Student Planners: You will receive a student planner which you will be required to take to most of your classes, home at the end of each school day and then back to school every morning.
In your planner you will write the assignments that you need to work on and when they are due. This will help you to manage your time in the best possible way.
Every Friday, your Advisors will check your planner to ensure your homework assignments are being recorded. We will sign your planners and so will your parents before they are checked on a Friday. Parents are advised to read student planners every night and to sign on a Thursday night.
In your student planner you will also need to note how much time you are spending on homework in the evenings. This is so your teachers can monitor the hours you spend on homework every week and discuss/modify if necessary.
Your planner is also a form of communication between students, teachers and parents so all parties know what is happening and when.
Teachers may write small comments regarding your assignments, to you, or your parents can write notes to us also if they have any comments to make or they would like questions answered.
Homework: You will be required to complete regular homework for most subjects. Homework is usually revision work or an extension of what has been covered in the classroom. It is work that although may be challenging at times, you should be able to complete on your own. If you are having difficulties, it is important that you ask the appropriate teacher for help. Homework will be checked and recorded. It must be ready to show when asked for. If you have other commitments at home which make completing homework difficult, please discuss this with the subject teacher before the due date.
Access to a computer is essential this year. If you do not have one at home, you will need to spend some time in the computer lab after school when required, for research or typing up assignments. Some of your work this year will be submitted to your teachers online.
You will also need a memory stick to transport your work to school to print it out. It is important to organise this well before due dates.
Lockers: We have lockers outside on the first floor and boxes inside.
The lockers are to contain your backpacks, lunches, money and anything you consider valuable (although you are not encouraged to bring valuables to school). The inside boxes are to house your books only.
It is very important to be organized before classes. You need to have the appropriate materials organized before the bell goes. It is not acceptable once the class has started, to be at your locker looking for materials.
You need to purchase a padlock for your locker. Please keep one key yourself (on a key ring or perhaps around your neck with your student ID). Give all of the spare keys to Mr. Steve or Ms. Leeanne as soon as possible, for safekeeping. You can also use a combination padlock.
Footwear: Footwear is not permitted in the classroom so please place all shoes etc neatly outside the classroom doors.
Evaluation: Work as if everything counts because it does! This year everything you do will be recorded or evaluated in some way. Teachers will explain to you what is expected in each of their subjects.
We are looking forward to another exciting year of growth. We are also looking forward to your dedication and positive attitudes.
Have a wonderful year!
Ms. Leeanne and Mr. Steve (Grade 6 Advisors)
