Focus and purpose The primary goal of this course is to provide students with opportunities to refine their skills in speaking in functional communicative contexts, understanding native spoken French, reading authentic texts and writing for a variety of purposes. It also provides students with the opportunity to discover and understand different cultures and help students become aware of the value of a studying a second language. Active student participation in the learning process is highly emphasized through projects, communicative activities.
Process The proposed process involves a variety of methods of instruction which are designed to meet the needs of the different learning styles of the students.

IB Assessment Assessment will be based on a variety of written compositions, text-handling exercises, oral activities such as role-playing, discussions, debates, problem-solving activities, formal presentations and interviews, as well as listening comprehension activities, tests and quizzes to demonstrate mastery of vocabulary and grammatical structures needed for communication. Final assessment includes two parts:
External Assessment - Written component 70% total
Paper 1: Reading comprehension (40%) 1 hour and 30 minutes This will be comprehension exercises based on a number of written texts and a short writing exercise in response to a written text.
Paper #2: Written production (30%) 1 hour and 30 minutes There will be one writing task from a choice of six titles. A minimum of 250 word response is required at this level.
Internal Assessment - Oral component 30% total
Two oral activities will be internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IBO.
VIS Assessment The VIS grade will be based on the differentiation of tasks and assignments from the above list. These differentiated tasks and assignments will be handed out with the course outlines at the beginning of the school year.
