Leeanne Smith, known as "Ms. Leeanne" to students at VIS, is from New Zealand.  She grew up on farms in Ranfurly, Central Otago and in Methven, Canterbury on New Zealand's South Island.

Before coming to VIS in 2003, Leeanne spent six months as Deputy Principal at Panyathip Bilingual School here in Vientiane. At VIS, Ms. Leeanne is the Grade 6 Class Advisor, and teaches Grade 6 students Drama, English and Social Studies.

Prior to coming to Laos, Leeanne held a two-year teaching and Deputy Principal position on the Island of Tonga. She spent many years teaching in Canterbury, where her classes ranged from Kindergarten to Grade 6. In addition to teaching, Leeanne has organised holiday programs for different organizations and has worked as a nurse's aide and farm laborer, while studying.

When asked what she likes best about teaching, Leeanne said, "making a difference in children's lives -- being able to reflect at the end of any school year and marvel at the progress these 'little sponges' have made.  It's very rewarding."

Most of Leeanne's time away from teaching is taken up with being a mum. She is married to Neil Smith, who works as a travel consultant for Diethelm Travel. They have two children at VIS, Jess, Grade 7 and Caleb, Grade 4.
