Daily Living

Many western consumer goods are available in Vientiane, although many people choose to go to Thailand to purchase a wider selection of products. There is a variety of good restaurants in town serving Asian, Italian, Indian, French, and other western foods.

Satellite and Cable TV is available and provides access to stations such as CNN, BBC, ESPN, Discovery, HBO, ABC AsiaPacific, Star Movies and others. Several magazines, an English newspaper, and a French newspaper are available locally. Broadband and dial-up internet services are available at home as well as a large number of Internet cafes.

Security

Recently there has been some increase in the number of house break-ins and bag snatching from bicycle baskets. A backpack or a "bum-bag" are good ways to carry money or goods when riding a bike.

Although it is a local custom to leave your shoes outside the house, there have been incidences where people have had them stolen - keep good shoes inside your house.

There is a security advantage to employing staff who spend time in and around your house when you are away. Also, make a point of making friends among your neighbours.
