Vientiane has many beautiful Buddhist temples (wats), several Christian churches and two mosques. While the Lao people are extremely polite and are not likely to complain to visitors about their dress or actions, visitors should remain respectful of Lao customs and traditions and carefully stay within the constraints of acceptable behavior. This includes conservative dress for men, but more importantly for women. Short skirts or shorts, and revealing tank tops are not appropriate. Many women in Laos still wear the traditional long skirt, or sinh.

Language

Citizens of Laos speak Lao, which is very similar to Thai language. There are a number of good resources available to assist with learning Lao and the Lao-English dictionary produced by Paiboon Publishers can be recommended. The "Why is a Tuk-Tuk called a Tuk-Tuk" section of the VIS website is designed to assist in learning Lao language.
