Municipal Vientiane, the capital city with a population of approximately 530,000, has more the feel of a large town. The city is situated on the banks of the Mekong River and offers a relatively safe and pollution free environment.
Vientiane is a good city for walking, and getting around is easy on bicycle, motorbike, or tuk-tuk (small, 3-wheeled motorcycle "carts" seating 4 people or more). However, some roads are still not paved and are a challenge during the rainy season. Major road construction projects create a good deal of dust and traffic flow disruptions.
Traffic has increased considerably in the past few years. An ancient city with a long and interesting history, and containing more than100 wats (Buddhist temples), Vientiane is the site of many colorful festivals and ceremonies throughout the year. By no means can Vientiane be considered a modern city. Humble homes and small shops are situated alongside elegant homes. Please follow the links below to find out more specific information. |
