Music Teacher CREDENTIALS Bachelor of Communication Athabasca University, Athabasca, AB Diploma of Broadcast Communications British Columbia Institute of Technology, Burnaby, BC Diploma of Sign Language Studies Vancouver Community College, Vancouver, BC Diploma of Sign Language Interpretation Grant McEwen College, Edmonton, AB Ms. Michele moved to Vientiane 7 years ago with her husband, Don and their two children, Kiana and Keeghan. She spent her first 4 years here teaching Kindergarten at Vientiane Pattana School. She began working part time at VIS in 2005 as a Teacher-on-Call. Having just returned from a year spent in her home country of Canada, Ms. Michele is pleased to be back at VIS this year to teach Music for Preschool to Grade 2. She believes that children and music create a magical mix and she is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of that experience. Ms. Michele loves to sing and can be heard doing so in the shower, kitchen, car and everywhere else that she goes. When not at work she enjoys spending time with her family, playing music, learning new languages and satisfying her ‘sweet tooth’. Ms. Michele speaks passable French and Lao and is fluent in American Sign Language. Before becoming a teacher she worked as an interpreter for the Deaf. She is grateful to Mr. Tony for sharing his ‘space’ with her and she anticipates a super year! |

Grade 12 Advisor Math CREDENTIALS Bachelor of Education Queens University Bachelor of Computing and Information Science Queens University Canadian Certification in Middle/High School Math, Science, Computing Mr. Michel, as he is known to his students, is Canadian and Australian. He has worked in national schools in Canada and Australia, and international schools in China, Mexico, Malaysia and Nepal. Michel is here in Vientiane with his partner Christine. They have a passion for food, traveling, people, and living in different cultures. Michel expects his second year at VIS to be challenging, fun and rewarding. What he likes best about teaching is seeing students achieve and experience success and gain confidence. Michel has a special interest in Student Council affairs and will be involved as a Co-advisor. He also enjoys certain sports, reading, Art and Music. |

Secondary English Teacher
CREDENTIALS Bachelor of Arts English Master of Arts in Popular Culture Studies Bowling Green State University Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics Ohio University United States Teaching Certification Mark Gordon comes from Cleveland, Ohio in the United States and is a Secondary School English Language Arts teacher. Students at VIS know Mark as "Mr. Gordon." Prior to joining the VIS staff in 1997, Mark taught English in Saudi Arabia, Thailand and at many NGOs throughout Laos. Mark's ability to speak, read and write Thai and Lao come in handy when he is called upon to assist as a translator and interpreter. Mark sees learning as "what makes us human" and so considers us all to be students. Being surrounded by the world of knowledge and learning and being able to gain and transfer such to others, makes coming to work worthwhile. Mark is married with three children; his daughter Julia attends VIS in Grade 4. Mark's wife Keo operates a small restaurant here in Vientiane. |

Grade 6 Teacher Secondary Drama, English and Social Studies CREDENTIALS Bachelor of Education Teaching Diploma Christchurch College of Education and Canterbury University New Zealand Teaching Certification Leeanne Smith, known as "Ms. Leeanne" to students at VIS, is from New Zealand. She grew up on farms in Ranfurly, Central Otago and in Methven, Canterbury on New Zealand's South Island. Before coming to VIS in 2003, Leeanne spent six months as Deputy Principal at Panyathip Bilingual School here in Vientiane. At VIS, Ms. Leeanne is the Grade 6 Class Advisor, and teaches Grade 6 students Drama, English and Social Studies. Prior to coming to Laos, Leeanne held a two-year teaching and Deputy Principal position on the Island of Tonga. She spent many years teaching in Canterbury, where her classes ranged from Kindergarten to Grade 6. In addition to teaching, Leeanne has organised holiday programs for different organizations and has worked as a nurse's aide and farm laborer, while studying. When asked what she likes best about teaching, Leeanne said, "making a difference in children's lives -- being able to reflect at the end of any school year and marvel at the progress these 'little sponges' have made. It's very rewarding." Most of Leeanne's time away from teaching is taken up with being a mum. She is married to Neil Smith, who works as a travel consultant for Diethelm Travel. They have two children at VIS, Jess, Grade 7 and Caleb, Grade 4. |

Librarian Theory of Knowledge CREDENTIALS Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education University of Regina Canadian Teaching Certification Laura Forgie, known as "Miss Laura" to the students at VIS, is from Saskatchewan, Canada. She grew up on the flat wheat-filled prairies where you could "see forever". Before coming to VIS in 2001, Laura taught Grade 7/8, Grades 3-8 Arts Education and Computers, and Grades 1-8 French in Canada. She also spent a year teaching English in Japan. Laura loves to see students "get it" when they truly understand something, and grow through new skills and technology. Outside of school life, Laura is interested in Middle Eastern dance, Tai Chi, aromatherapy, Music, Art, and, of course, reading! Laura has two cats, Zeke and Toes, also from Canada. |
