On April 26, the 2007-2008 VIS Student Council hosted the first ever Student Council Gala Ball at the Lao Plaza Hotel to raise money for a local publishing house, Big Brother Mouse. With over 200 guests in their best suits and dresses, the evening was a runaway success, with the guest speaker from Big Brother Mouse keeping the audience enthralled as he spoke about the work that he and his colleagues undertake, promoting literacy in the remote villages of Lao. He spoke of walking for hours to remote villages to host "Book Parties" where village children have often their first experience with a book. At the end of the fun and games, reading activities and party atmosphere the children are left with a book of their own and a book exchange system left with the village school. The Student Council, with the support of many generous sponsors and gala guests, raised more than twenty million kip to support Big Brother Mouse in their efforts across the country. The letter below and photos were received from Mr Khamla after she and her colleagues travelled out into the villages and hosted book parties with some of the funds donated by the VIS Student Council. |

MRISA 2008/2009 Last weekend we had the annual planning meeting in Bangkok for all Athletic Directors from the 8 MRISA schools. At this meeting it was decided to change the format of MRISA tournaments for the 2008/09 school year. The reasons for this change are primarily out of concern for the welfare of participating students. Previously attempting to play two sports over two days was physically stressful to students, and they often returned home in no fit state to attend school the next day. The new system consists of three single sport tournaments at each level with Softball dropping out, meaning there will be two playing days for each sport, and each student will play 5 games regardless of results earlier in the tournament. We are confident this new format will result in a healthier and more enjoyable experience for all involved. Below is the schedule for next year’s tournaments. | DATE | SPORT/AGE GROUP | VENUE | | October 30- November 1 | High School Volleyball | ISHCMC | | November 6-9 | Middle School Basketball | NISC | | March 5-8 | High School Football | UNIS | | March 5-8 | Middle School Volleyball | ISE | | April 2-5 | High School Basketball | SSIS | | May 7-10 | Middle School Football | VIS | As you can see we are hosting Middle School Football next year which will be great to see at our new campus. As always coaches are a real priority so if anyone thinks they would like to assist in either a coaching or assistant position please contact me at school or at
